IVF
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a revolutionary assisted reproductive technology (ART) designed to help individuals and couples overcome infertility and achieve parenthood. IVF involves a series of medical procedures where eggs are retrieved from a woman’s ovaries, fertilized with sperm in a laboratory, and then the resulting embryo(s) is transferred back into the woman’s uterus to establish a pregnancy.
The IVF Process: Step by Step
Ovarian Stimulation:
- The process begins with hormonal medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs in a single cycle.
- This is monitored through regular blood tests and ultrasounds to track the growth and maturity of the follicles.
Egg Retrieval (Oocyte Retrieval):
- Once the eggs are mature, they are retrieved from the ovaries using a minimally invasive procedure called transvaginal ultrasound-guided aspiration.
- The procedure is performed under mild sedation to ensure comfort.
Fertilization:
- The retrieved eggs are combined with sperm in a laboratory.
- Fertilization occurs either naturally (by mixing sperm with eggs) or via ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), where a single sperm is directly injected into an egg for fertilization.
Embryo Culture:
- The fertilized eggs develop into embryos in a controlled laboratory environment.
- The embryos are monitored over 3-5 days to ensure their growth and quality.
Embryo Transfer:
- A healthy embryo is selected and transferred into the woman’s uterus using a thin catheter.
- The procedure is quick and painless, requiring no anesthesia.
Pregnancy Test:
- Approximately two weeks after the embryo transfer, a blood test is conducted to check for pregnancy.
Who Can Benefit from IVF?
IVF is an effective solution for many infertility challenges, including:
- Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
- Male infertility (low sperm count, motility issues)
- Unexplained infertility
- Endometriosis
- Ovulation disorders such as PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)
- Age-related infertility
- Couples who have experienced multiple miscarriages
- Failed attempts with other fertility treatments such as IUI
Advantages of IVF
- High success rates, especially for younger women or when using advanced techniques like ICSI.
- Helps couples with severe infertility issues conceive.
- Provides the opportunity for genetic testing (PGT) of embryos to detect potential chromosomal abnormalities.
- Allows the option of freezing embryos for future use.
